CRADLE BABY SCHEME AND REDUCTION IN FEMALE  IMR

To eliminate the incidence of female infanticide and to create the awareness among the people regarding equality of gender, cradle baby scheme has been started by the Honorable Chief Minister in October 1992.

So for 530 infants have been received at the cradle baby center, Salem as given below:

The infants received from 10/92 to 4/96 136
The infants received from 5/96 to 4/2001 10
The infants received from 5/2001  to 26.12.2003 136
Total 530

The NGOs and the citizens of Salem have contributed their part for the successful implementation of the scheme.  Facilities in the center such as fridge, washing machine, gas connection, UPS, floors with tiles etc. were received as voluntary donation.

The babies received in the center are being sent to the various adoption centers approved by the Government from where those babies are adopted by eligible couple.

Motivating parents on sterilization and emphasizing for the retention of female infants with parents themselves are given more importance.

A rally has been conducted under the leadership of Honorable Social Welfare Minister, Honorable Health Minister to create awareness among the public regarding elimination of female infanticide and schemes related to women empowerment.

Due to the revival of Cradle Baby Scheme and other efforts by the District Administration, the female IMR has been brought down from the level of 108/1000 in the year 1999 to below 50/1000 in the year 2002.  Other steps taken by the District Administration are: 

  • Vigorous implementation of Honorable Chief Minister’s 18th programme for women and girl child.

  • Girl Child protection Salem.

  • Activation of 385 Village level monitory committee monitory pregnant      Women and ensuing that no infant mortality occur.

  • Advocating institutional delivered.

  • Starting free help line 2402000 in Collectors Camp Office for registering complaints against female infanticide.

  • Conducting 28000 Sterilization in the year 2002.

  • Involving SHG. NGO’s common citizens and all Govt. Department in the campaign.

  • Registering all scan Centres under PNDT Act. 1994

  • Taking action on dais and  Untrained people doing deliveries.

  • Filing complaints on cases of female infanticide.
